Chili Cook Off In January!

What better time to warm up with some chili than in the middle of winter!  The Sioux Falls Roller Dollz are hosting a Chili Cook Off on January 25th, 2014, from 11am to 2pm, at the Sioux Falls Coliseum.  Along with the chili cookoff, there will be a jalapeno eating contest, costume contest, kids area, and local Karaoke DJ Special Request!

If you think you have Sioux Falls' BEST chili recipe, you need to enter this cookoff.  Winners get some really cool prizes as well as bragging rights.

Every contest needs some rules, here's what's expected for our chili cookoff:

1. Entries are for “freestyle” chili.  Any type—Texas style, vegetarian, chicken or pork chili, hot dog chili, etc. —can be entered.
2. Commercial chili powder is permissible, but complete commercial chili mixes (“just add meat” mixes that contain premeasured spices) are NOT permitted.
3. Cooks are to prepare and cook chili in as sanitary a method as possible. Remember, the public will be eating your chili.
4. All entries will be judged on the following criteria:

  • AROMA—Chili should smell appettizing (20%)
  • CONSISTENCY—Chili should have a pleasing combination of textures (20%)
  • TASTE—Chili should taste good (40%)
  • AFTERTASTE—Chili should leave a pleasant taste after swallowing (20%)
  • NOTE:  HEAT is NOT one of the criteria for judging.  The heat range is for public consumers of chili and may count in the polling for People’s Choice.

5. Cooks will be asked to reveal the contents of their chili (exact recipe is not necessary)
6. The Chili Cook off Committee will provide saltine crackers to each chili entry.
7. Each entry must be kept at an appropriate temperature throughout the contest.
8. Entries must be submitted by January 18th, 2014

  • First and Second Place winners for Chili will be chosen by a panel of judges. The public will pick the People’s Choice winner and presentation will DEFINITELY be a factor in that award.
  • Showmanship or presentation IS a criteria for judging for People’s Choice. Decorate your space and make it festive
  • The decision of the panel of judges is final.
  • The Chili Cook off Committee reserves the right to refuse any entry.
  •  Set up is no later than 10:30 am.  Serving cups will be provided for each entry. Judging will begin at 11:45, with winners announced at 1:45 pm.
  • Booth space will be approximately 10’ x 10’.
  • Table and 2 chairs will be provided.

Each chili contestant should make at least six (6) quarts (1.5 gallons) of homemade chili, rated on a HEAT scale of 1 to 5, with 5 as the HOTTEST!!!  Each contestant will make their entry at home and bring it to the cook-off site.

The contest will start off with a plate of 21 peppers.  The contestant will eat one pepper over a minute's time.  This will get your mouth nice an hot!  Then the contestant will have another minute to eat as many peppers of their 20 remaining peppers as possible.  The person to eat the most peppers in one minute wins.  If more than one person eats all 21 peppers, the person who finishes first, wins.
